Beirut, The Destruction of a Pearl

During my seven years of hell in Beirut in the 1980s during the height of the civil war in Lebanon, I witnessed a lot of shelling, shooting and many explosions which destroyed the lives of so many people. What happened in Beirut on the evening of Tuesday 4 August 2020 was completely different from anything the whole of the Near East has seen in its modern history.
